Recent Historical Moments

If I wanted to be pedantic, which for the most part, I like to be, usually for the sake of 'a joke', every moment that passes is an historical moment. It's just the some are inevitably more significant than others.

Since I've been in Australia I've witnessed the removal of a government that perpetuated racism, to a new government, that in it's short time has already achieved a great deal. And yesterday, I watched that government do something it promised it always would, should it be elected. How baffling is it to see a goverment actually go through with what they promised! Coming from the UK, it certainly is a rarity.

Yesterday, as I'm sure you're aware, Kevin Rudd apologised to Australia's stolen generation for past atrocities and outlined plans of rehabilitation. It was an incredible moment to watch on television, more so because of the people that it meant so much to. Unsurprisingly, John Howard wasn't there as he was always against 'apologising', yet all 5 of Australia's past prime ministers that are still alive, were.

I've linked the news report from the Al Jazeera news site, because it's a site worth reading news in general from anyway, as it gives perspectives from the Arab world. We're lucky in the UK in that we have the Guardian & the BBC, but still, details can always be 'missed'...better still, read Z Net.
